I've been thinking a lot about the work I've done with grays over the years. My teacher, Mary Todd Beam, always emphasized the power of what she called 'mid-tones.' She used them as backdrop to something she wanted to make more noticeable. So, I always approached grays as more of an afterthought.
More recently, I've come to more deeply appreciate that mid-tone idea, extending it to a variety of greater extremes of contrast. In this case, I'm anchoring my exploration in Black and Yellows or Reds (Grays will show up soon).
Part of what fuels my fascination, here, is the simplification afforded by the power of using just two colors. That concept contrasts starkly with my complementary fascination in employing as many colors as I can pack into the painting. (Note, for anyone curious: There's an application of both approaches in the Circles Section).
